Preparing to go to Bali & Singapore

For Bali

Visa Requirements: In order to enter Indonesia, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of return.

  • We recommend having at least three blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • U.S. and Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa in order to enter Indonesia. You can purchase your visa at the airport upon arrival for $35 using either USD or credit card. Additionally, you can opt to purchase an electronic visa in advance through Indonesia Immigration.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Best Time to Visit: Bali has a tropical climate, and the dry season from April to October is generally considered the best time to visit. However, even during the wet season, Bali can still be enjoyable, with fewer tourists and lush green landscapes. Consider your preferred activities and weather preferences when planning your trip.

Packing tips: We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.

  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • Waterproof shoes or sandals, a swimsuit, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended for outdoor activities.
  • Binoculars are handy for a closer look at local wildlife and scenery.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit temples or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).

Health and Safety: Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic regarding any necessary vaccinations or medications before traveling to Bali. Practice good hygiene, drink bottled water, and be cautious with street food. Use insect repellent to protect against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever.

Currency and Money: The official currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). It's advisable to carry a mix of cash (small denominations) and credit/debit cards. ATMs are widely available, but inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage. International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour. Please note that counterfeiting can be an issue on the island of Bali. Some establishments will accept U.S. dollars, but often only if they are in good condition and issued after 1996.

Electricity: Indonesia operates on 230 volts and use Types C and F plugs with two small, round pins. We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.

Transportation: Bali has various transportation options, including taxis, ride-hailing services, and rental scooters/cars. If you plan to drive, make sure you have an international driving license. Traffic in some areas can be congested, so plan your travel accordingly.

Respect Local Customs: Balinese people are deeply rooted in their traditions and religion. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting temples, and observe cultural etiquette. It's polite to ask for permission before taking photos of individuals, especially during religious ceremonies. Learn a few basic Indonesian phrases and greet locals with a smile. Politeness and a friendly demeanor go a long way in Bali. Embrace the local customs, try some Balinese phrases, and show appreciation for the island's unique culture.

Sun Protection and Hydration: Bali's tropical climate means strong sun exposure. Pack and use sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Travel Insurance: It's highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. Ensure that your insurance policy includes activities you plan to engage in, such as water sports or motorbike riding.

Respect the Environment: Bali is known for its natural beauty, and it's important to be mindful of the environment. Dispose of trash responsibly, support eco-friendly initiatives, and be respectful of the island's fragile ecosystems.

Tipping: At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep currency exchange rates in mind. We recommend tipping the equivalent of $ 8 USD to $ 10 USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $ 3 USD per person per day for your driver. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $ 2 USD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash.

For Singapore

Visa Requirements: Check if you need a visa to enter Singapore based on your nationality and purpose of travel.

Weather: Singapore has a tropical climate, so expect high humidity and occasional rainfall throughout the year.

Local Customs: Singapore is known for its strict laws and cleanliness. Chewing gum is banned, and littering can result in heavy fines.

Cultural Sensitivity: Respect local customs and traditions, particularly in places of worship. Dress modestly and remove your shoes when required.

Language: English is one of Singapore's official languages, making communication easy for most travelers.

Transportation: Singapore's public transportation system is efficient and well-connected. Consider getting an EZ-Link card for convenient access to buses and the MRT.

Food: Singapore is a food paradise. Don't miss out on trying local delicacies at hawker centers and food courts.

Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Singapore. A service charge is usually included in bills at restaurants.

Health Precautions: Tap water is safe to drink, but you might prefer bottled water. Mosquito repellent might be useful due to the tropical climate.

Currency: Singapore Dollar (SGD) is the official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted.

Electrical Outlets: Singapore uses the Type G electrical outlets. Bring a universal adapter if needed.

Safety: Singapore is generally safe, with low crime rates. Still, practice common travel safety measures and keep an eye on your belongings.

Attractions: Singapore offers a mix of modern attractions like Marina Bay Sands and traditional sites like Chinatown. Plan your itinerary accordingly.

Local Laws: Familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations, including those related to smoking, littering, and jaywalking.
