Planning a trip to Spain?

Visa requirements: To enter Spain, U.S., and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.

  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. And Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visas-exempt countries (including the U.S. And Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Voyages Hub travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Culture and customs: Respect local customs, especially in religious sites. Dress modestly when visiting churches and be aware of local traditions and festivals that might affect your plans. Spaniards often greet each other with a kiss on each cheek, even in professional settings. It's customary to take your time during meals, and tipping around 10% is typical in restaurants.

Weather: Spain has diverse climates depending on the region. Check the weather for the specific cities you plan to visit and pack accordingly. Summers can be hot, especially in southern regions.

Language: The official language is Spanish, and while many people in tourist areas speak English, it's helpful to learn some basic Spanish phrases to enhance your interactions.

Currency: The official currency is the Euro (EUR). Inform your bank about your travel dates to avoid any issues with using your credit/debit cards, and consider carrying some cash for smaller establishments.

Cuisine: Experience authentic Spanish breakfast by indulging in a local favorite–pairing a pastry with a cup of coffee. For lunch, savor a three-course meal featuring iconic Spanish dishes like savory seafood paella or grilled meat with fried potatoes. Dinner served late between 9 pm and midnight, is lighter than lunch. Throughout the day, enjoy the Spanish tradition of tapas–small, flavorful plates.

In Barcelona, partake in Catalan cuisine, distinct from other Spanish regions. Most eateries offer pa amb tomàquet, consisting of toasted bread with tomato and olive oil. The culinary scene features fresh seafood, hearty meats, cheeses, and locally grown vegetables, including wild mushrooms.

Traveling to the southern Andalusia region unveils a cuisine influenced by neighboring countries, notably with Arabic elements. Popular choices include kebabs and desserts often incorporate almonds, honey, and cinnamon. Don't miss the regional delicacy, Serrano ham, and relish the renowned chilled soup, gazpacho

Electricity: Spain utilizes the European standard of 220-240 volts and employs Type C, E, or F plugs featuring two small, round pins. It is advisable to bring a universal adapter, and if you intend to use personal devices like a hairdryer without a built-in converter, consider packing a voltage converter.  It's important to note that the air conditioning in European hotels may not be as powerful or as cold as what you might be accustomed to in the U.S. or Canada. When available, air conditioning is typically regulated seasonally and centrally controlled by the hotel.

While hotels may offer amenities like hairdryers, irons, and small appliances, there's no guarantee of their availability in every establishment.

Time zone: Spain observes a time zone that is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).

Safety: Spain is generally safe for tourists, but be vigilant against pickpocketing in crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious in tourist hotspots.
