Preparing to go to Bali ?
Visa Requirements: In order to enter Indonesia, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of return.
U.S. and Canadian passport holders are required to obtain a visa to enter Indonesia. This can be done upon arrival at the airport for a fee of $35, payable by cash (USD) or credit card. Alternatively, you can apply for an eVisa or traditional visa in advance through Indonesia Immigration.
All foreign visitors to Bali must pay a Tourism Levy of approximately $10, which can be paid in advance through the Love Bali website or mobile app (available on Apple and Android).
Additionally, all foreign visitors entering Indonesia are required to complete an electronic Customs Declaration form (e-CD) within 72 hours of arrival. Upon completion, you will receive a QR code, which must be shown after you collect your luggage.
In response to the Mpox being declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, Bali has introduced new health screening protocols for incoming travelers. All travelers must complete the SATUSEHAT Health Pass before departure and present the generated QR code to Health Quarantine Officers upon arrival. Travelers will also go through a thermal screening to check for body temperatures of 37.5°C (99.5°F) or higher. If your temperature is elevated, additional screening or testing will be required.
Best Time to Visit: Bali has a tropical climate, and the dry season from April to October is generally considered the best time to visit. However, even during the wet season, Bali can still be enjoyable, with fewer tourists and lush green landscapes. Consider your preferred activities and weather preferences when planning your trip.
Packing tips: We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
- A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
- Waterproof shoes or sandals, a swimsuit, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended for outdoor activities.
- Binoculars are handy for a closer look at local wildlife and scenery.
- You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
- It is preferable not to visit temples or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
Health and Safety: Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic regarding any necessary vaccinations or medications before traveling to Bali. Practice good hygiene, drink bottled water, and be cautious with street food. Use insect repellent to protect against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever.
Currency and Money: The official currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). It's advisable to carry a mix of cash (small denominations) and credit/debit cards. ATMs are widely available, but inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage. International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour. Please note that counterfeiting can be an issue on the island of Bali. Some establishments will accept U.S. dollars, but often only if they are in good condition and issued after 1996.
Electricity: Indonesia operates on 230 volts and use Types C and F plugs with two small, round pins. We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
Transportation: Bali has various transportation options, including taxis, ride-hailing services, and rental scooters/cars. If you plan to drive, make sure you have an international driving license. Traffic in some areas can be congested, so plan your travel accordingly.
Respect Local Customs: Balinese people are deeply rooted in their traditions and religion. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting temples, and observe cultural etiquette. It's polite to ask for permission before taking photos of individuals, especially during religious ceremonies. Learn a few basic Indonesian phrases and greet locals with a smile. Politeness and a friendly demeanor go a long way in Bali. Embrace the local customs, try some Balinese phrases, and show appreciation for the island's unique culture.
Sun Protection and Hydration: Bali's tropical climate means strong sun exposure. Pack and use sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Travel Insurance: It's highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. Ensure that your insurance policy includes activities you plan to engage in, such as water sports or motorbike riding.
Respect the Environment: Bali is known for its natural beauty, and it's important to be mindful of the environment. Dispose of trash responsibly, support eco-friendly initiatives, and be respectful of the island's fragile ecosystems.
Tipping: At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep currency exchange rates in mind. We recommend tipping the equivalent of $ 8 USD to $ 10 USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $ 3 USD per person per day for your driver. If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $ 2 USD per local guide. Tips can only be paid in cash.
