Planning a trip to Japan?
Visa requirements: In order to enter Japan, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of return.
- We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact Japan's consulate for your specific entry requirements.
Culture and customs: Respect cultural differences and traditions. For example, avoid eating or drinking while walking, be mindful of noise levels in public spaces, and refrain from displaying affection in public. In many traditional Japanese settings, such as temples, ryokans (traditional inns), and some restaurants, you may be required to remove your shoes before entering. When visiting temples and shrines, observe quietness and refrain from loud conversations or disruptive behavior. Follow the local customs, such as washing your hands and mouth at the purification fountain before entering.
Weather: Spring brings mild temperatures and cherry blossoms (sakura) to much of Japan. March is still cool, but temperatures gradually warm up in April and May. Summer in Japan is hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F) in many areas. June and July bring the rainy season (tsuyu or baiu), characterized by frequent rain showers and cloudy days. Typhoons occur from July to September, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to coastal areas. Autumn is known for its vibrant fall foliage (koyo) and mild temperatures. September may still feel warm, but temperatures gradually cool down as the season progresses. Winter in Japan varies from cold to mild depending on the region. Northern regions like Hokkaido experience cold temperatures and heavy snowfall, ideal for winter sports. Central regions like Tokyo and Kyoto have cool winters, with temperatures averaging between 0°C and 10°C (32°F to 50°F).
Local laws: Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs, as there are strict penalties for drug offenses, alcohol consumption in public places, and public intoxication.
Language: Japanese is the official language. While English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, it's helpful to learn a few basic Japanese phrases to enhance your experience and show respect for the local culture.
Currency: Japan's currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). While credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, it's advisable to carry cash, especially in rural areas or smaller establishments.
Transportation: Japan has an efficient and extensive transportation system, including trains, subways, and buses. Consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass if you plan to travel between cities by train, as it can offer significant savings.
Electricity: Japan uses a 100-volt electrical system with two flat-pin plugs, similar to those used in the United States. However, it's a good idea to bring a universal adapter if your devices have different plug types.
Time zone: Japan is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET)..
Safety: Japan is generally a safe country with low crime rates. However, it's always wise to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and tourist spots.
Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Japan and can sometimes be considered rude. Exceptional service is usually rewarded with a polite thank-you instead of a tip.
