Health and Vaccinations: You will be required to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card ) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine. Visit cdc.gov/yellowfever for more information.
Visit a healthcare professional or travel clinic before your trip to Ghana. They can provide information on recommended vaccinations and health precautions, such as malaria prophylaxis. Carry any necessary medications, insect repellent, and take precautions to stay hydrated and avoid foodborne illnesses.
Drink bottled water only. Refrain from ingesting tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they're cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
Bring a small first-aid kit, including antacids, anti-diarrhea medication, motion sickness medication, and any prescription medications in your carry-on luggage.
If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
Currency: The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's always a good idea to have some cash on hand. The official currency of Ghana is the Ghanaian cedi (GHS). It is advisable to carry local currency for smaller purchases and transactions. Credit cards are widely accepted in major establishments, but it's always good to have cash on hand, especially when traveling to remote areas.
Packing tips: We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
You may want supportive walking sandals to keep cool during city sightseeing tours. Comfortable, closed-toed shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for activities in the desert.
Pack a swimsuit, as many of the hotels have pools that you are free to use at your leisure.
Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
Occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.
A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when other facilities are not readily available while on the road.
Safety and Security: Egypt and Ghana is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. However, like any other place, it is essential to take common-sense precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuable items, and exercise caution when traveling at night or in unfamiliar areas. Stay updated on the latest travel advisories from your government.
Cultural Etiquette: Ghana has a rich cultural heritage, and it's important to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, particularly when visiting religious or traditional sites. Greet locals with a handshake, and always ask for permission before taking photos, especially of individuals.
Tipping and Gratuities: At the conclusion of your tour, it's customary to offer your driver/guide a gratuity in USD. We recommend tipping the equivalent of $ 8 USD to $ 10 USD per person per day.
- If applicable, we also recommend $ 2 USD per local guide.
- Tips can only be paid in cash.
- You can also expect to be solicited for tips from the hospitality and restaurant staff that you encounter. Leaving as little as the equivalent of $ 1 USD is greatly appreciated, although tipping is entirely at your discretion.
Climate and Weather:
Egypt is located in a desert climate, so it can get very hot during the day, particularly during the summer months (June to August). Bring light and breathable clothing, and stay hydrated.
Ghana has a tropical climate, characterized by two main seasons: the rainy season (April to October) and the dry season (November to March). Pack appropriate clothing, including lightweight and breathable fabrics, as well as rain gear if traveling during the wet season.
Electricity and Plug Types:
In Egypt, the standard voltage is 220-240 volts, with a frequency of 50 Hz. Electrical outlets in Egypt are Type C (European two-pin), Type F (Schuko two-pin), and Type G (British three-pin). If you're coming from a country with a different voltage, you may need a voltage converter or adapter to use your electronics in Egypt. It's always a good idea to check the voltage requirements of your devices before you travel, and to bring an adapter if necessary. Many hotels in Egypt will have outlets that can accommodate a variety of plug types, but it's always best to check beforehand to avoid any inconvenience.
Ghana uses 230V electrical outlets with Type D and Type G plugs. Consider bringing a universal adapter to ensure compatibility with local sockets.
Internet and Communication: Internet access is available in major cities and tourist areas, but coverage may be limited in more remote locations. Consider purchasing a local SIM card for affordable data and calling options.
Respect for Local Customs: Show respect for local customs and traditions, including greetings, gestures, and social norms.
