Planning a trip to Portugal?
Visa requirements: To enter Portugal, American and Canadian citizens must hold a valid passport valid for at least six months beyond the re-entry date. It's advised to have at least one blank passport page for entry stamps. Starting in 2025, citizens from the US and Canada will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization to visit many European countries. This applies to over 60 visa-exempt nations, including the US and Canada, who will require ETIAS authorization to visit 30 European countries, even if they previously traveled without a visa. If visiting multiple countries under this requirement, the ETIAS form needs to be completed only once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS authorization. For those who aren't US or Canadian citizens, specific entry requirements should be checked with the consulate of the destination country.
Language: Portuguese is the official language. While many Portuguese people speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic Portuguese phrases can be helpful and appreciated.
Currency: The currency used is the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to have some cash for smaller purchases or in places that might not take cards.
Weather: Portugal generally enjoys a Mediterranean climate, but it can vary by region. Summers (June to August) are hot and dry, while winters (December to February) can be mild, especially in the southern regions. Coastal areas might experience cooler breezes.
Clothing and Packing: We suggest bringing breathable, loose clothing that can be layered for temperature changes, along with a light jacket or rain gear. Opt for durable walking shoes or sneakers for sightseeing. Consider including dressier outfits if visiting upscale restaurants or attending special events. It's advisable to avoid entering churches or religious sites with exposed legs and shoulders, as entry might be refused based on this attire
Cuisine: Portuguese cuisine boasts fresh, robust flavors. Sample seafood stew prepared in a cataplana, a copper pan resembling a shell, or indulge in the national favorite, bacalhau (salted cod). Typically, a couvert, comprising bread, butter, and olives, accompanies meals; while complimentary in several restaurants, some may include a charge for it on your bill.
Tipping: Tipping isn't obligatory, but it's appreciated, especially in restaurants. A tip of around 5-10% of the bill is customary if a service charge isn't included.
Dining: Portuguese cuisine is diverse and delicious. Seafood is a highlight, along with dishes like bacalhau (salted cod) and pastéis de nata (custard tarts). Dinner is typically eaten later in the evening compared to some other countries in Europe.
Electricity: In Portugal, the standard electrical voltage is 220-240 volts, and they utilize plug types C, E, or F featuring two small, rounded pins. Bringing a universal adapter is advisable, and if you intend to use personal appliances without built-in converters, consider carrying a voltage converter as well.
Air conditioning in European hotels might differ from what you're accustomed to in North America regarding strength and cooling. Typically, it's regulated seasonally and centrally controlled by the hotel.
While hotels may offer amenities like hairdryers, irons, and small appliances, their availability cannot be guaranteed.
Transportation: Portugal has an efficient transportation system. Trains, buses, and the metro are commonly used for travel between cities. Renting a car can be convenient for exploring rural areas.
Safety: Portugal is generally safe for travelers. However, it's always wise to be cautious of pickpockets in touristy areas and to keep an eye on your belongings.
Culture and Customs: Portuguese culture values courtesy and politeness. Greetings are important, and a handshake is common when meeting someone for the first time. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites.
Time Zone: Portugal operates on Western European Time (WET) or Western European Summer Time (WEST) during daylight saving.
