PLANNING A TRIP TO UNITED KINGDOM AND FRANCE ?
Visa and Entry Requirements: U.S. and Canadian citizens must have a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after their return date. It's recommended to have at least one blank page in the passport for entry stamps.
Starting in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders will need to register for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter many European countries. Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries, including the U.S. and Canada, must apply for ETIAS authorization to visit 30 European countries. This means that even if you previously traveled to these countries without a visa, you will need ETIAS authorization starting in 2025. If you are visiting multiple countries requiring ETIAS, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers must obtain their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more information, visit our Help Center.
If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, please contact the consulate of each country you plan to visit for specific entry requirements.
Language: In Paris, French is the official language of France, so it's a good idea to learn some basic French phrases before you go. English is widely spoken in major tourist areas, but it's always appreciated to try speaking some French.
Currency: In the United Kingdom, you will use Pound sterling, and in France, you will use the euro. While better exchange rates are often available abroad, it's advisable to order some local currency from your bank before you depart to have it on hand upon arrival.
We highly recommend bringing debit and credit cards, as they can be used to withdraw cash from local banks as needed. Most ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and accept debit/credit cards, but check with your bank about any withdrawal fees.
International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards with the EMV chip system. If you do not have a debit or credit card with a chip, we strongly suggest requesting one from your bank before your trip.
Additionally, plan to bring cash for tipping your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. It's also helpful to have some local coins, as some public restrooms may charge a fee for use.
Tipping: Tipping is optional. However, we suggest tipping your Tour Director $10-$12 USD per person per day, and your driver USD 3 per person per day, all in cash. At restaurants, cafes, and bars, it's customary to leave a small tip of about 10% if you receive good service.
Etiquette: French culture places a high value on politeness and courtesy. It's important to greet people with "Bonjour" (Good morning) or "Bonsoir" (Good evening), and to say "Merci" (Thank you) and "Au revoir" (Goodbye) when leaving. Also, avoid talking loudly in public places.
Safety: The U.K. and France is generally a safe country, but like any other tourist destination, you should be cautious of pickpockets and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas. It's also a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
Packing tips: We suggest bringing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be layered to handle varying temperatures, along with a light jacket or rainwear. Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are ideal for sightseeing. If you plan to visit high-end restaurants or attend special performances, consider packing dressier clothing. Please note that many churches and religious sites require modest dress, covering bare legs and shoulders, and may deny entry if this guideline is not followed. Bringing a reusable water bottle is recommended to reduce single-use plastic waste. Additionally, pack a universal adapter and a voltage converter if you intend to use devices like hairdryers that don't have a built-in converter. Finally, carry your Insurance Card from your primary insurance provider in your carry-on luggage.
Weather: Best Time to Visit the United Kingdom:
The ideal times to visit the United Kingdom are during spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is typically warm and dry, allowing you to enjoy beautiful spring blooms or vibrant autumn foliage while avoiding the busier summer crowds.
However, the UK is suitable for travel year-round due to its relatively temperate climate, which doesn't experience extreme temperatures in summer or winter. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 86°F.
Winter (December to February) can also be a pleasant time to visit. While some attractions in mountainous and northern regions (including much of Scotland) may close due to snow, the main cities remain open and are less crowded, making sightseeing more enjoyable.
Best Time to Visit France:
The optimal times to visit France are in spring (April-May), summer (June-August), and autumn (September-October). Spring is pleasant nationwide, with fewer tourists and temperatures ranging from 55°F to 68°F. Summer temperatures can reach up to 84°F, but are generally not too hot to hinder exploration of cities, mountains, and countryside. Autumn remains warm, with temperatures between 61°F and 77°F, and features stunning landscapes as the leaves change color.
France enjoys mild weather overall, though there are regional differences: the south has a Mediterranean climate, while the north near the English Channel experiences wetter conditions. In August, many parts of the country shut down as locals head to the sunnier south.
Winter is a great time to explore Paris, as there are fewer tourists but the local restaurants and attractions are still bustling with activity.
Cuisine: Breakfast is provided each morning at the hotel and is typically a buffet with both hot and cold options.
For affordable traditional English food, consider trying a pub meal like fish and chips or bangers and mash. Other tasty options include Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages.
Modern-day London offers a wide variety of international cuisines, including Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African. For a quintessential English experience, enjoy afternoon tea with finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods.
In Paris, you can find steaming crepes from sidewalk vendors and delicious pastries with hot café au lait at cafes. Restaurants often offer a prix fixe menu, which provides a set three- or four-course meal at a reasonable price.
In France, lunch is typically served from noon until 2pm, while dinner starts from 7:30pm onward. If you prefer to eat earlier, cafes offer light entrées and sandwiches throughout the afternoon and evening.
When it comes to drinking water, tap water in France is generally safe to drink. However, some people may prefer to drink bottled water for taste or personal preference. Bottled water is widely available in France and can be found at grocery stores, convenience stores, and restaurants.
Time Zone: U.K and France is located in Central European Time (CET) or UTC+1, which is one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1). However, during daylight saving time, which starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October, France observes Central European Summer Time (CEST) or UTC+2, which is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. So, it's important to adjust your clock accordingly if you're traveling to France during the daylight saving time period.
