Planning a trip to Australia?
Visa requirements: In order to enter Australia, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
- We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
- U.S. and Canadian passport holders must purchase an individual visa from the Australian government’s Electronic Travel Authority mobile app.
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
What to Pack: When packing for your trip to Australia, opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that can be layered to suit the country’s varied climates. A light jacket or raincoat is useful for cooler evenings or unexpected weather changes. Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are essential for exploring cities and natural sites. Given Australia’s intense sun, don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen, a good pair of sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Insect repellent can also come in handy, especially in tropical areas. Carrying a reusable water bottle is a great way to stay hydrated while reducing waste. If you plan to dine at upscale restaurants or attend formal events, consider packing a few smart-casual or dressy outfits as well.
Weather : Australia's vast landscape and varied geography create a wide range of climates across the country, making it important for tourists to understand regional weather patterns to plan their trips effectively.
In the southern regions (such as Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide), you’ll experience four distinct seasons. Summers (from December to February) are warm, with temperatures often reaching the high 20s to low 30s°C (70s to 90s°F), while winters (from June to August) are cooler, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F).
In the northern regions (like Cairns and Darwin), the climate is tropical, with wet and dry seasons. The wet season (from November to April) brings high humidity and rainfall, with temperatures ranging between 24°C and 31°C (75°F to 88°F), while the dry season (from May to October) is marked by milder temperatures and lower humidity.
Language: English is the official language, but Aussie slang can be colorful! ("Arvo" means afternoon, "brekkie" is breakfast, etc.)
Currency: The currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and contactless payments are common.
Electricity: Australia uses a standard voltage of 220-240 volts and employs Type I plugs, which have three large, flat pins arranged at an angle. It's a good idea to bring a universal adapter for your electronics, and if you're planning to use your own hairdryer or other devices without a built-in voltage converter, don’t forget to pack one as well.
Time zone: Australia operates on Australian Eastern Standard Time, which is 15 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time. It's important to note that Queensland doesn't observe daylight saving time, so it remains on Australian Eastern Standard Time throughout the year.
Tipping : Tipping isn’t expected in most places, though rounding up or tipping for exceptional service is appreciated.
Biosecurity is Strict : Australia is serious about protecting its environment. Don’t bring in fresh food, plants, or animal products without checking the rules
