Planning a trip to India?

Visa Requirements: All visitors to India must obtain a valid visa prior to travel, including U.S. and Canadian citizens. India offers an e-Visa system for tourist travel, which is applied for online before departure. Approval times, visa categories, and fees vary by nationality, so we recommend applying early.

  • To enter India, your passport must:
  • Be valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of return, and
  • Have at least two blank pages for immigration endorsements.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, please consult the Indian Embassy or Consulate in your home country for specific visa requirements that apply to your nationality.
  • Visa regulations and entry requirements change periodically; travelers should verify requirements before booking international travel.

Culture and Customs:

  • India is rich in cultural and religious diversity, and customs vary by region. As a general guideline:
  • Dress modestly, especially at religious sites. Covering shoulders and knees is recommended.
  • Remove footwear before entering temples, mosques, and some homes.
  • Public displays of affection are uncommon and may be considered inappropriate in certain areas.
  • Always be respectful of local traditions, festivals, and religious practices.
  • Interactions with locals are typically warm and welcoming.

Weather: India’s climate varies widely by season and region:

Winter (October–March): Mild and pleasant in the Golden Triangle — ideal for sightseeing.

Summer (April–June): Hot temperatures, especially in landlocked northern areas like Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

Monsoon (July–September): Rainfall increases, which cools temperatures but may affect road travel and outdoor activities.

Pack appropriate clothing, sun protection, and light layers, especially for fluctuating temperatures.

Local Laws:

  • India enforces strict penalties for drug possession and trafficking.
  • Consumption of alcohol is regulated and varies by state (some states restrict or prohibit alcohol).
  • Smoking in public areas and littering may be subject to fines.
  • Always carry a copy of your passport and visa during travel.
  • Non-compliance with local laws can lead to fines, detention, or deportation. Respect local rules and official guidance.

Language: Hindi is the most widely spoken language in northern India. English is commonly used for tourism, business, government forms, and signage in major cities. Guides, hotel staff, and drivers usually speak English.

Currency: The currency of India is the Indian Rupee (INR). Credit and debit cards are broadly accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. However, cash is preferred in local markets, small eateries, and rural areas.

Currency exchange services and ATMs are available in all major cities.

Transportation: India has an extensive transport infrastructure. For travelers, the most common options include:

Private air-conditioned vehicle — ideal for Golden Triangle sightseeing.

Domestic flights — quick and efficient for longer distances.

Trains — scenic but require advance reservations.

Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and app-based ride services are widely available in cities.

Always use licensed transport providers where possible.

Electricity:

India uses 230V / 50Hz electrical current. Power outlets typically accept Type C, D, and M plugs. Traveling with a universal adapter is recommended.

Time Zone:

India Standard Time (IST) is UTC +5:30, and the country does not observe daylight saving time.

Safety:

  • India is generally safe for international travelers, especially in major tourist regions. Standard precautions include:
  • Avoiding displays of expensive items in crowded areas.
  • Using registered taxis or ride-hail services at night.
  • Staying informed about local conditions and weather advisories.
  • Travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.

Festivals and Local Observances: India celebrates many festivals throughout the year. During major holidays, some services and attractions may operate with modified schedules, and travel can become busier.

Being considerate of local celebrations enhances your cultural experience.
