Itinerary

Your adventure begins today as you depart for Johannesburg to commence your Icons of Africa Journey.

Welcome to Kenya! Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.  Please note that the usual check-in time is 3:00 PM, so you can take some time to settle in and rest. The remainder of the day is free for you to relax after your international flight or take a stroll nearby.

Overnight in Nairobi

After breakfast at your Nairobi hotel, embark on a scenic journey to the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. If you are traveling by road, the drive will take you through the spectacular Great Rift Valley, offering breathtaking views and the opportunity to stop for photographs along the escarpment. Alternatively, a short flight will whisk you directly into the heart of the Mara, where vast savannahs stretch to the horizon.

Upon arrival, check in at your safari lodge or luxury tented camp and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch. After some time to relax and settle in, set out on your first thrilling afternoon game drive across the rolling grasslands. The Masai Mara teems with wildlife — from prides of lions lounging in the shade to graceful gazelles, towering giraffes, and herds of elephants moving silently through the plains.

As the sun sets in golden hues, return to your lodge for dinner and a restful evening surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Overnight in Masai Mara National Reserve

Start the day with an early morning game drive when the light is soft and wildlife is most active. This is often the best time to witness predators hunting or elephants gathering at watering holes. After an exhilarating morning, return to the lodge for a full breakfast followed by some leisure time — perhaps a swim, a massage, or simply soaking in the panoramic views from your veranda.

Enjoy lunch at the lodge before heading out for your afternoon game drive, covering new territories of the reserve. Your experienced guide will share fascinating insights about the Masai ecosystem, animal behavior, and the culture of the local Maasai people.

As the day fades, pause for a traditional sundowner in the bush before returning to camp for dinner under the stars.

Overnight in Masai Mara National Reserve

After an early breakfast, depart the Masai Mara for your return journey to Nairobi. From there, board your connecting flight to Victoria Falls, with a brief stopover in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Upon arrival in Zimbabwe, a friendly representative will greet you and transfer you to your elegant Victoria Falls hotel or lodge, located within close proximity to the falls themselves. The rest of the day is free for you to unwind after your travels — relax by the pool, enjoy a drink overlooking the Zambezi River, or take an optional sunset cruise where you might spot hippos, crocodiles, and elephants along the riverbanks.

In the evening, you could choose to dine at one of the local restaurants offering traditional African cuisine and live music.

Overnight in Victoria Falls

After breakfast, embark on a guided walking tour of Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders.” Accompanied by your guide, explore the network of rainforest trails leading to a series of spectacular viewpoints offering breathtaking panoramas of the mighty falls. Feel the refreshing mist on your face as you admire one of the largest waterfalls in the world cascading into the deep Batoka Gorge.

Your guide will share the fascinating history of the falls, its geology, and cultural importance to the local people. This is also a perfect opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture rainbows and dramatic water plumes.

After the tour, return to your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure. You might choose an optional activity such as a helicopter flight over the falls, a local craft market visit, or simply relax and enjoy the amenities of your lodge.

Overnight in Victoria Falls

After breakfast, transfer to Victoria Falls Airport for your flight to Cape Town, South Africa’s coastal gem known for its vibrant culture and stunning natural beauty. Upon arrival, you will be met by your driver and transferred to your centrally located hotel.

The rest of the day is yours to explore at leisure. You might stroll along the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a lively area filled with shops, restaurants, and street performers, or enjoy a quiet dinner while watching boats drift by in the harbor. For those interested, optional evening excursions such as a sunset cruise on Table Bay or a wine-tasting dinner can be arranged.

Overnight in Cape Town

Enjoy breakfast before departing on a full-day guided tour of the Cape Peninsula, a route considered one of the most scenic drives in the world. Travel along the Atlantic Seaboard, passing the exclusive suburbs of Clifton and Camps Bay with their white-sand beaches backed by the Twelve Apostles mountain range.

Continue through Hout Bay, where you may take an optional boat ride to Seal Island, home to thousands of Cape fur seals. Drive along the spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive, carved dramatically into the mountainside, to reach the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve — the southwesternmost point of the African continent.

Ascend by funicular to Cape Point Lighthouse for panoramic views where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans are said to meet. On your return journey, visit Boulders Beach to observe the charming colony of endangered African penguins up close before returning to your hotel in the evening.

Overnight in Cape Town

After breakfast, set off on a relaxing journey to the picturesque Cape Winelands, a region renowned for its scenic landscapes, world-class wines, and charming colonial architecture. Your route will take you through rolling vineyards framed by dramatic mountain ranges.

Visit several prestigious wine estates in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, or Paarl, where you can sample award-winning wines and learn about South Africa’s winemaking traditions. Enjoy leisurely strolls through vineyard gardens, visit historic cellar doors, and admire the blend of Dutch and French architectural influences.

You may also opt for a gourmet lunch at a wine estate, complemented by panoramic vineyard views. Return to Cape Town in the late afternoon, with time to relax or explore local restaurants in the city.

Overnight in Cape Town

Start your day with a trip to the iconic Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Take the revolving cable car to the summit for breathtaking 360-degree views of Cape Town, Robben Island, and the Cape Peninsula. Enjoy time at the top to walk along designated trails, take photos, or relax at the café overlooking the city.

Descend and continue your exploration with a guided city tour, visiting landmarks such as the historic Company’s Garden, the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood known for its cobbled streets and pastel houses, and Greenmarket Square, a vibrant spot for local crafts and souvenirs. Learn about the city’s fascinating history, from colonial influences to modern multiculturalism.

The afternoon is free for shopping, relaxing, or enjoying a leisurely waterfront dinner to celebrate your last evening in South Africa.

Overnight in Cape Town

Enjoy your final breakfast at the hotel. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time to explore Cape Town one last time — perhaps a morning walk along the Sea Point Promenade or some last-minute souvenir shopping at the V&A Waterfront.

PLANNING A TRIP TO KENYA, ZAMBIA, AND SOUTH AFRICA ?

Visa requirements

To travel to Kenya, U.S. and Canadian citizens must have a valid passport that remains valid for at least six months after their return date. It’s also recommended to have at least two blank pages available for entry stamps. A visa is required and must be obtained in advance through Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization portal at etakenya.go.ke/en. Be sure to follow our step-by-step visa application guide before your departure.

To enter South Africa—and Zimbabwe if you're joining the tour extension—U.S. and Canadian citizens must hold a valid passport that remains valid for at least six months beyond the date of return. We recommend having at least three blank pages in your passport for entry stamps.

No visa is required for U.S. and Canadian travelers entering South Africa. However, a visa is required for entry into Zimbabwe. U.S. citizens can obtain a visa upon arrival at the airport for $30 USD, payable in cash with exact change. Canadian citizens can obtain a single-entry visa either on arrival or through an e-visa service for $75 USD per person.

If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, please check with the consulate of each country you plan to visit to confirm your individual entry requirements.

Safety precautions: Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe are generally safe for tourists, but it's always a good idea to be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone at night.

Health concerns: Check with your doctor or a travel health clinic to see what vaccinations are recommended for your trip. Malaria is a concern in some areas of South Africa and Zimbabwe, so take appropriate precautions. In terms of drinking water, tap water is generally safe to drink in major cities and tourist areas. However, it is recommended to check with the locals or hotel staff about the quality of tap water in smaller towns or rural areas. If you prefer, bottled water is widely available for purchase in South Africa. It is also recommended to avoid drinking water from streams, rivers, or lakes as it may contain harmful bacteria.

Clothing and Packing: We suggest packing loose, layered clothing to adapt to changing temperatures. Quick-dry fabrics are ideal for hot days, while a warm layer is useful for cool mornings and evenings.

For game drives, wear neutral-colored clothing—bright colors can startle wildlife, and blue or black may attract tsetse flies. Comfortable closed-toe shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for daytime walking.

Many hotels have pools, so don’t forget a swimsuit. Be sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to guard against the sun. Depending on your travel season, a lightweight rain jacket may come in handy due to occasional showers.

Essential extras include mosquito repellent, binoculars, a flashlight, and a small bottle of hand sanitizer for times when facilities may be limited.

Please note: Kenya has a strict ban on plastic bags. It’s illegal to use, sell, or carry them, and violations may result in steep fines or imprisonment. Use reusable cloth bags for shopping and avoid bringing any plastic bags, including resealable ones.

Since transfers between parks can be long and over rough terrain, consider bringing a small travel pillow for added comfort.

We also recommend a universal power adapter and a voltage converter if you're bringing electronics like hairdryers that don’t have built-in converters. Lastly, carry your medical insurance card in your hand luggage in case of emergencies.

Climate and seasons:  Kenya enjoys a diverse climate due to its varied geography, but you can generally expect warm temperatures. Coastal areas are hot and humid, while the highlands are cooler.

South Africa has a generally mild climate, but temperatures can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year. Victoria Falls has a tropical climate with high humidity and rainfall. Be sure to check the weather forecast for your destination and pack accordingly.

Currency: The Currency in Kenya is Kenyan Shilling, South Africa's currency is the rand, while Zimbabwe uses the US dollar. Be sure to have enough local currency on hand for your trip, and consider bringing a credit card for a larger-purchases. We recommend that you carry small amounts of U.S. dollars (only crisp bills printed in 2004 or later, $1, $5, $10 bills are ideal).

Driving: South Africa has left-hand traffic, and it is recommended to have an international driving permit if you plan on renting a car.

Electricity: The voltage in South Africa is 220-240V and the power outlets are Type M, which have three round pins. It is recommended to bring a universal adapter if you plan on using electronic devices.

Language: English is widely spoken in Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe, but there are many other official languages and dialects. It's always a good idea to learn a few key phrases in the local language.

Time Zone: Kenya (and Tanzania on the tour extension) is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 8 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time (ET). South Africa has only one time zone, which is South African Standard Time (SAST). SAST is 2 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+2), and it does not observe daylight saving time.

Cuisine:  Kenyan cuisine is a flavorful mix of indigenous ingredients, regional traditions, and influences from Indian, Arab, and European cultures. South Africa has a diverse food culture that reflects its multicultural society. Traditional South African dishes include braai (barbecue), biltong (dried meat), boerewors (sausage), bobotie (spiced minced meat), and bredie (stew). In addition to traditional dishes, South Africa also has a wide range of international cuisine options, including Indian, Italian, Chinese, and more.

REVIEW

This was the trip of a lifetime! From the moment we left Nairobi for the Masai Mara, everything felt perfectly organized. The safari drives were absolutely incredible — we saw lions, elephants, giraffes, and even a leopard within the first two days. Our lodge was comfortable, with excellent food and welcoming staff. Victoria Falls was a stunning highlight — standing in the mist and hearing the roar of the water was unforgettable. The transition to Cape Town was seamless, and the city itself was breathtaking, with Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula offering postcard-perfect views. The Cape Winelands tour was a relaxed finale to a truly diverse journey. I’d highly recommend this itinerary to anyone from North America looking for an all-in-one African adventure that combines wildlife, natural wonders, and culture.

Our Icons of Africa Journey exceeded every expectation! The days in the Masai Mara were magical — we had the chance to watch elephants crossing the plains at sunrise and lions resting right beside our vehicle. The guides were knowledgeable and passionate, making every game drive fascinating and fun. Flying into Victoria Falls was smooth, and the guided tour there was incredible. We walked through lush rainforest trails and stopped at several viewpoints — the sound and mist of the Falls were truly awe-inspiring. Ending the trip in Cape Town felt like the perfect balance: beautiful ocean views, vibrant city life, and delicious food and wine. Everything was so well coordinated — flights, transfers, and accommodations. It’s an amazing itinerary for North Americans who want to experience Africa comfortably but still feel immersed in the adventure.

An unforgettable experience from start to finish! The Masai Mara was even more impressive than I imagined — wide open landscapes, endless wildlife, and wonderful hospitality at our camp. Each day brought new sightings and photo opportunities. Victoria Falls was spectacular. Our local guide shared great stories about the area, and the viewpoints gave us incredible photo ops. The optional sunset cruise on the Zambezi River was one of my favorite moments — calm water, beautiful light, and hippos everywhere! Cape Town wrapped it all up perfectly. Table Mountain, Boulders Beach penguins, and the Cape of Good Hope were all breathtaking. The wine tasting in the Cape Winelands was a relaxing end to a busy trip. Everything ran smoothly, and the local hosts were exceptional. For travelers from North America, this itinerary hits all the must-see highlights of Africa in one seamless journey.
